Default Does robitussin dm really cause birth defects?

I am posting this for a friend. She is completely devastated.

please help!
while i was trying to conceive i got a terrible cold, so I took
robitussin dm. next day I study the web on possible side effects, just
to find out that it can cause birth defects or cleft palate. Are there
actually any facts about that, besides that study of 1998 on chicken
embryos?
I am very worried. please post if you know anything about it. thanks
If you have any advice - do you mind posting it here? Thank you so much.

Robitussin is what both my doula and my OB recommended for my cough when I was sick last year. (Unfortunately it didn't help at all). And my first baby was born healthy.

Maybe if you would drink gallons and gallons of it and that over the whole time of your pregnancy. But a few teaspoons during a cold? Nope, I don't think so.

A one or two time use of Robitussin should be OK. I personally would limit it to that or even bite the bullet and take nothing at all and only use natural items (tea, vitamin-rich food, etc.)
