Obviously the younger, fitter and healthier man will be more likely to fertilese an egg, providing he has no other problems. Not all young, fit and healthy people are fertile you know! The older man who smokes and drinks has a lesser chance of fertilising an egg, but he still could.

First off just the age difference is enough to make a difference. As a man gets older his whole system starts to slow down a man in his prime will produce fresh sperm every three days and as a man gets older it can take up to 5 days to replenish his sperm.Alchohool and cigarettes have a major impact on how much a man produces sperm it's very important to have a good amount of vitamin c and e to produce sperm and alcohool and cigarettes kill all the vitamin c and most of vitamin e in the human body.
