Soda has empty calories, so yes, if you cut out the soda it will help. The healthiest way to lose weight though is to excersise and to eat healthy. I'm not saying give up all your favorite junk foods, but only eat them in moderation. As for the soda, it contains caffeine, so if you drink a lot of them, you might have withdrawls such as headaches but that's normal and it will pass. Getting healthy takes a big commitment.
