I've had two epidurals. I couldn't walk for about three hours with the first one but I was up almost immediately after the second one. I delivered the baby, held him for a short while I had a little rest then I got up and took a shower. Maybe it depends on the anaesthesiologist?

My epidural was like heaven sent. I am so glad I got it when my son was born. I could have not lasted without. From what my OB told me the epidurals are very safe. He was very confident and recommended it. I felt in good hands and had no reason to question his judgement.

An excellent source for learning about the different options is a book called "Gentle Birth Choices" it tells you all the info you need to pick your method and make your birth plan. The newest edition also comes with a great DVD that is really encouraging and inspiring. I have a copy and found it really helpful in feeling mentally prepared and less frightened about the pain.
