I do not thinks so because Europe uses this practice and it has not worked. It has basically made all immigrants second class citizens and leads to more ethnic tensions in those countries. The USA's immigration situation is 10 times better than what Europe has.I got this from Yale Law. Apparently children born from illegal parents did not fall under this category until the Supreme court ruled that they did. The 14th amendment states anyone who falls under the Jurisdiction of US law are given automatic birth if they are born here.

I think we should get rid of it, because it encourages illegal immigration to our country and then the whole family gets to stay here simply because, one child was born here. Soon as a mexican gets pregnant they immigrate here and has the baby, then she gets to stay and her family. Than now that she is a citizen, she lives off of welfare that we pay. An average illegal immigrant (who has children here and/or migrant worker) gets an average of 22,500$ in welfare a year. www.cdc.org

I know this may sound discriminatory, but I think children born to non-citizen parents should not be granted automatic citizenship. Here's my idea: How about giving those children some sort of "green card". When the child reaches 18 years of age (for example) he/she could apply to become a US citizen or switch to his/her parents' citizenship status. If US citizenship is the choice, the child can then sponsor his/her parents.

If a child is born of two parents who are either citizens, or in the process to become a citizen then the child should be considered a US citizen at birth if born in the States. Now if the parents have no intention and haven't started the process for themselves, then no, the child shouldn't be considered a citizen. There are a lot of people who don't want to become citizens but expect the full rights of one. You can't have it both ways. Nor should you be allowed to use your child as a proxy to get around the issue.
