Default Has anybody ever had an epidural that resulted in a spinal block, and then...

...afterwards had the spinal headache? I have had a headache for 9 days now (since I delivered the baby) that just wont go away. Has anybody ever had this? IF so, how did you get rid of it?

A spinal is when they do a direct injection (single shot) into the spinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord. An epidural is when they feed a catheter tube through a needle, then remove the needle, leaving the tube in, before the dura that surrounds the spinal cord fluid space. Thus, an epidural and a spinal (saddle block) are not the same.

An epidural that is fed too deep may puncture the dura and BECOME an unintended spinal - in which case, just like when an intended spinal (saddle) occurs, some spinal fluid may leak from the injection site and throw off the balance (equilbrium) in the spinal cord area.

This can result in a 'spinal headache'... there is no failsafe remedy. But, if you talk to your doctor about it, they may be able to create a blood patch on the injection site and rectify the problem... again, this is not certain, but worth a try.

Do you have a fever with it? If so, go to the doctor immediately; it may be menengitis or another infection from the epidural injection site.

Good luck and I hope that you feel better soon!

hmmm, not sure why I got a thumbs down? Because of medically sound advise? Odd... linked a source for verification...

Ye. I have 4 children, I had an epidural with all of their deliveries. With the 3rd the doctor really messed me up and punctured me 4 times and it took over an hour for him to set me up, and I heard horrible crunching noises with the cathetar. Well, I ended up with a severe headache in the hospital due to the membrane being punctured in my spine and fluid leaking out. I had to have a 24 hour caffeine drip in my IV, which consisted of 10 bags of caffeine solution on a very fast flow-so I had to pee like crazy every 10 mins or so. But they did that immediately in the hospital. It should be done right away like the next day. You should call your doctor back right away about it.

I'm not sure what a spinal block is, but I had headaches for a few weeks after my delivery (I had an epidural), and alot of lower back pain, sometimes so bad I couldn't stand for that long.
