I can't answer for an independent fitness gym, but Gold's Gym is a franchise operation, and according to their website:"FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS Potential franchisees must possess the capital sufficient to fund the development of a Gold's Gym facility. The minimum financial requirements for an individual or group are a net worth of $800,000 with $300,000 in cash or liquid assets."

Isn't that slightly the wrong question. Isn't the question, how many folks could you persuade to join your gym. How would you reach them, how would you convince them that Gold's isn't a safer option, how would you continue to reach more people to cope with the people leaving, and how much could you charge them. Then you can feed that back into the costing. If you're thinking of opening a gym in downtown manhattan, with 10,000sq feet of equipment, you'll need state of the art kit, everything perfect. If you are thinking of opening up as the only outfit in a small town, then you'll need just a small shop and a few bits of equipment. Big differences.Commercial gym equipment can start at about $1000 and go over $20,000. But on the other hand, you could lease the kit, which would be more in the long run, but less up front. Its an annoying answer, but, how long is a piece of string?

There are several franchises out there. Good commercial equipment is not cheap. I think I have seen numbers of $250K and up.
