I work with people on benefits a lot. The problem is that, in many cases, people are genuinely better off not working. In CAB, we're often asked to do 'better-off' calculations for someone thinking of coming off Jobseekers' allowance and into work. By the time you take into account paying rent, childcare, school meals, prescriptions etc., people are often better off (financially at least) NOT working. And you can't condemn people for choosing to stay on benefits in that case. On the other hand, I dealt with a young single man last week who's been on Jobseekers' allowance for 9 YEARS ! He was in good health and simply had no intention of working. The scary thing is, we're now seeing 16 and 17 year-olds whose parents have never worked and now the kids are leaving school and going straight on to 'the dole'. It's a cycle which needs to be broken before the system implodes.

Does the system need changing? Maybe there should be better procedures for vetting applicants, more testing, more proof.

What can be done to get people off benefit? Give people the incentive to be better off when they come off it. Why go back to work if your rent goes up, you pay for prescriptions, you pay for kids school dinners etc, let people see the benefits of working. Help people back to work with training that is usefull for the area they live in.
£500 if they get caught and prosecuted i think.
its all confidential.

If you think its confidential and you're happy grassing someone for the sake of £500 then go form it, me personally I wouldn't do it.

I don't think it's worth the possible hassle it could cause.

personally i would 'grass' someone if i knew they were a benefit cheat at the end of the day it is you and me they are stealing from its our taxes that are been paid out. There are loads of genuine people who can't get benefits because these ppl bleed the system dry.

the system does need changing as the present one is just been abused

I was at a meeting today about a pilot scheme which is being implemented in my locality. It'll basically pay people £40 per week on top of their wages to come off Incapacity benefit and into work. I just think this is money that could be spent in SO many other ways, rather than bribing people to work. If you genuinely want to get off 'the sick' and work, why shouldn't your wages be enough ? I don't get anything extra on top of mine....

it annoys me that people that genuinely cant work dont get enough help. my mum worked from the day she left school up until she was diagnosed with cancer then osteopsorosis and she was hardly given anything, then theres some fat bint down the road that lives with her mum, they both claim every benefit under the sun and the daughter goes or should i say went out to work altho she was on that certain benefit that states you are unfit for work, until she was grassed on, they were raking it in

what about the fat people that rather than diet get invalid benefit and one of those scooters.
the shopping centers are full of them.

they run you over in the supermarket while they lean across for the large chocolate bars and cakes
