How does a woman in 2005 have "no other means" of making money than selling her body for sex? Theres plenty of jobs, free training, benefits.
Have you ever seen a real life prostitute? I'd never seen on up until last year, only ever on tv or in magazine/newspapers. The ones I have seen; in Leeds, Halifax, Huddersfield, York (a wide spread of Yorkshire) have been drugged up to their eyeballs. Maybe there are "clean" ones, but very few.

I know someone who got hooked on drugs and to feed her habit turned to prostitution... she lost her job, home and friends because of the drugs. I know it is not a good way to make money but she earned money and began to realise that she was better than all that... came of the drugs, managed to rent a flat and eventually stopped prostituting when she had earned enough money to but herself clothes and go for a job interview.

youve just said, youve never seen a prostitute up until last year so i really dont think you have a valid arguement on that bit about most of them being druggies.
yes ive seen them and yes ive known some. i didnt say there were no other means of making money, its just sometimes its easier i suppose to lay back and think of england and earn some, you also find people hold down 'proper' jobs and still work the streets. |

How do I not have a vaild argument when I'm passing them every single week? I bet if you look at statistics, most of them will more than likely be druggies. I bet you wouldnt want the "safe house" in your street or next door to you. I know I wouldnt.
You'll find that Trudie said that some of them have "No other means"

you're passing a select few lors, yeah some of them are on drugs i dont dispute that, but you said most of them, thats not true.
and personally no i wouldnt want the brothel on my street but it doesnt need to be on a residential street does it  |

Well, I diagree with you. I think most of them are on drugs. I wouldnt want the "brothel" to be on my street or anywhere near my neighbourhood, but if these are introduced, them someones going to have to have it near them.

I think that they will prob. be introduced in town centres as this is were most of the action is !!!! It wouldnt bother me too much if a centre/housing/government run place was near me I would much rather see the girls/ladies in an controlled environment then loitering on the streets, safer for them and us !
I agree with 6cats... prostitutes will be much more cleaner than your average woman as shamful as it may be it is there lively hood and need to keep safe.. how many women do you know who have a one night stand and then go and have a STD check ?????? I have no probs. with prostitues as long as they dont bother me ! |

I'm not bothered really by prostitutes, if that's what they want to do then fair play. There'll always be plenty of mugs willing to pay for it so why not ?
I think the way it's going these days it should be in a controlled environment where they need health screening every 6 months or whatever though. It'd also protect the girls on the game from psychopaths (sp?) who want to hurt them. Just because they're selling themselves doesn't mean they should be killed or hurt or whatever ? I don't think they're 'bad' people because at the end of the day the way I see it is some sort of desperation must drive them to do that, I don't imagine a woman can just get up one day and choose prostitution as a career. Even if it is drugs, you never know a persons personal circumstances and what leads them to do it in the first place. As trudie says, as long as they don't bother me then I've no probs. |

i think its a very ignorant attitude to presume that all or most prostitutes are 'druggies' as you choose to call them!!! even if this is the reason that a woman decides to sell her body... i will make a presumption myself that most or all of us on here have never been pushed by circumstances in life to have to make a decision like that,.. who knows what life has thrown at some people? I also dont think any of us understand enough about it to make stereotypical remarks about the girls themselves. This was a debate over whether it was a good idea to make it legal not a personal attack at the women.
Im sorry if iv said too much but this has made me cross |

When debating, sometimes the topics get merged in with other topics, like this one. I dont have an ignorant attitude towards prostitutes, I have an opinion. All prostitutes that I have seen, hanging around in dimly lit back streets, on street corners, have been drug users. Its obvious to tell that they are active drug users. There is obviously prostitues that dont use drug, although i have not seen any. Theres the "high class hookers" where i have read a report on a while ago and they were using cocaine.
