Hiya,
Just a few additions on the moon debate.
1. The space race was won by the Americans which lead the russians into developing their technology towards space stations. We did learn a lot from the moon landing's ( 6 Apollo ) and what was learnt was the moon is a dead and sterile place with only metals such as titainium and platinum which might be worth mining when Earth based supplies run low so there isnt really a need to go back other then to test new technologies such as living spheres and such.
2. The American flag didnt actually "fly" as there is no atmosphere what so ever, so the flag would stay still unless disturbed. The movment most people saw was when the lunar module left the surface as the video camera that was stationed nearby to film the departure with the flag in the scene caught this movement caused by the thrusters of the module as it blasted off.
3. As for life in my opinion, here on Earth there are millions of forms of life, probably 90% of which we have never seen nor know about, the reason we havent met intergalactic or indeed extragalactic life is due to the uncomprihendable distances we have to endure to reach such places. an example of a short distance in space.....
If we could travel at 186,480 miles PER SECOND it would still take us 4 years and 3 months to reach our nearest star which is a little star with no interest, so again travelling at this speed to reach somewhere of known planetary activity we would be looking at anywhere upwards of 100 years to even get there. This is of course irrelivent as humans cant actually travel at these speeds without possibly a year or 2 to accelerate up to this speed and the same to get stopped, but thats another debate.
So in my opinion yes there has to be life out there but unless they are far advanced enough to know about space travel i doubt the human race will ever meet such beings.
