I,m a student and i would never do any of the tests for money that they offer at university.

I would do it for free if it were going to save the life or even change the life of a family member or anyone eles suffering from the same illness.

The drugs they give to human volunteers have already been tested on animals - it's the next stage in the safety checks, not an alternative to animal-testing. Thousands of people volunteer for the tests and only a tiny % have any adverse effects. True, one person out of 1000000 is one too many but the way the media's whipping up hysteria about it is crazy. At the end of the day, people volunteer - nobody is forcing them into it.

I 100% agree with everything you said above Kerry.

What I dont understand is why give someone a drug for leaukemia when they dont actually have it? its maybe defeating the point a little.

At uni there was always someone from some company offering money for your body (testing purposes!!) and it was usually £90 per test, but it was only creams and lotions, not drugs. Maybe at the time it might seem worth it but you never know what effects it might have on you in the long term, if nothing happens to you in the short term.

when it comes down to it they were offered money, to test an unknown drug, they were explained the risks and more than likely signed to say they understood.

True, they might be forcing them into it but they are playing on peoples vulnerability, The 6 people that had the bad reaction were only given 0.02% of the dosage given to the animals they tested it on, for a drug to still have an affect like this then they needed to test it some more, before administering it to somebodies son, daughter, sister etc. I agree that they would have been explained the risks etc, but what they probably forgot to say that should you end up with a big head and in a coma, we have no idea how to xure you. I don't beleive for 1 second that these people truely understood what could happen,

I have read that this testing was banned from Germany and our country let it go ahead i mean gave them the go ahead to test it. Also that the director of the company is now to busy to say sorry at the moment and he says its to early to say whether they will get compo for what has happened to them. I for one would be to chicken to trial a drug dont like taking the things even when i can read the side effects

I take your points but the thing is, when they test on animals, they give them HUGE dosages, more than a human would ever be given. You can't possibly predict how a human will react to a drug, even if it's been deemed 'safe' after animal testing. I'm sure these people had the known risks explained to them and if this was a freak result, even the medics couldn't have predicted what happened. I don't agree that the companies prey on people's vulnerability - these are grown men and they took the risk to make some money. That was their prerogative. People need to take some responsibility for their own actions and decisions. There have been enough cases of drugs which turned out to be extremely harmful in the long-term for people to understand what they might be getting into.

i think i read somewhere that this drug was tested on a dog and it died, they did not mention this to the people who were going to test it. i do think that the people testing it know what they are letting themselves in for, however i still feel for them and their families at this time. in the paper it said that one man had had over £60,000 from doing these drugs trials so i suppose its worth the risk for some people, but not enough to have your life taken.
