Alastair is in Year 6 (last year at Primary School) and he knows that condoms stop you getting diseases and babies! I've not gone into too much details with him but I will if he asks. go to be honest with them.

He'll be having sex education at school this year but I'm not sure how much they'll be told at 11.

my sex education was about the myths with periods and that women can stop babies happening if they want to. mind you that was the late 70s & very early 80s

I don't know how much schools think they can do - but if they're clever enough to know where to put it - they're clever enough to know to stop babies

We had good sex education at my school the lads were told all about periods etc and the girls were shown how to use a condom. We all thought it was a laugh but it did get the message across. ;-)

I dont think it should be left to the parents, not all parents are close enough to their kids to be able to talk like that, it certainly wasnt the case with me and my mum, i would never have discussed anything like that with her.
I think it should be taught in school, maybe in the first year of senior school, but i think they need to emphasise that you can get pregnant the first time you have sex, and teach them about all the STD's you can get etc, not just the basics.

I found the sex ed at my school more than enough! We knew more than we probably needed to and kept going over it year after year! (I think I've been mentally scarred by some of the videos!)

Although, just because a school gives good sex ed, doesn't mean people will listen to it! A girl in my class got herself pregnant just after turning 16 and dropped out of school completely. She thought it would make her BF stay with her (and to be honest they were never particularly careful in the first place) - however he called a hiatus - and it all went downhill!
I met her recently and she's living in a flat provided by the council and on benefits.
Granted she's incredibly happy now and her son is gorgeous and very well looked after, it still shows that some people choose to ignore the advice given to them!

I guess the governments and schools honestly can't win in some cases!

My daughters friend is pregnant, she is 14, she must be , what, 4 months gone now, still hasnt told her mum.
The teachers know, her friends know, god even i know.
I also think while we say are the schools doing enough etc etc, its not only school kids that go out and get pregnant by, accident, adults do too, spur of the moment thing and all that, dont tell me they dont know what could happen by having unprotected sex.
