Default Obesity in Kids

What are your thoughts ?

I personally find it sickening to watch their parents let them gobble down loads of junk when they clearly have a weight problem. I think it's sad for the kids as they're more than likely picked on in school for being fat.

I went to my nieces 8th birthday party yesterday and there was a couple of kids there (sisters) who are really fat and their Mum told me they loved their food and it was in their genes that they would be fat as they took after their auntie    who was always like that as a kid. What got me though was the fact that she had the pair of them dressed in lycra, spaghetti strapped dresses with sparkly chiffon over the top which just emphasised the weight issue further

Don't get me wrong, I do think that to a certain extent our weight / size can be hereditory, Anna isn't a skinny child and would eat and eat all day if I let her, so therefore I feel as a parent it's MY responsibility to ensure she has a balanced diet.

Hi Paula

This is a subject very close to my heart

my kids aren't fat but they're definitely not skinny either

there's a lot of reports in the media at the moment about childhood obesity and the risk of diabetes. They always call it diabetes not 'Type 2' diabetes which is not what my son suffers from. so he's been told on more than one occasion that he's got diabetes because he's fat and lazy!!! (Type 1 diabetes is insulin dependant and can attack athletic kids as much as lazy ones)

my ex-best friends son only exercises when he has to - like at school. she did buy him a trampoline last summer and he does use that, he want to eat junk all the time and is quite chunky although she does try to watch his diet but she shares custody with his Dad who feeds him rubbish. his Dad is approx 30 stones and had a heart attack in September - he's 36! you'd think he'd make an effort for his son but still smokes like a chimney too

Alastair has gone to swimming lessons since he was 5 and now is a brown belt at jujitsu and trains twice a week - he also swims for local club and trains there twice a week too! and at scouts they're always running around.

so a little effort from parents can make a BIG difference - spend a bit of time finding out a sport or activity that your kid likes (Alastair tried football rugby and cricket before setling on jujitsu and swimming) - I don;t see any problem with the occasion cake or choccy bar and trip to McDonalds but both my kids eats veg and fruit - although Alastair hates veg he will eat sweetcorn (on of off the cob) so we eat that a lot.

sorry for ranting on - yes it can be 'hereditary' for a small part but education and parent's perisistence pays off - my kids are a sure way of proving that

The kid next door is only 5 years old, but he looks about 8 or 9 and thats because of his massive build which is down to his poor diet.

His parents let him have chocolate ice cream in the morning and crisps whenever he demands them. Their excuse is that he's an 'IVF baby' and seeing that they had problems bringing him into this world they should meet his each and every need!

I think they are insane, surely it's the parents job to ensure that their child has a healthy diet and good eating habits.

xx

Hi Pickles,

It took us 2 years to have Lewis but he wasnt an IVF baby but still i wouldnt let him eat anything and everything just because it took so long and he should be spoilt as he also needs a good healthy balanced diet so surely to have waited so long you would want the best for them anyway and do anything you can to keep them as long as you can by staying healthy.

oh my god that is the most stupid thing i have ever heard
if he`s an IVF baby then shouldn`t they be looking to give him the best possible start in life, not diabetes and stuff
personally it makes me sick when you see all the kids in mcdonalds on a saturday (it`s one of my guilty pleasures) and it`s quite clear they shouldn`t be indulging in burgers. i used to have to catch buses in a morning and you used to see children eating crisps and having coke for breakfast.
i personally think that if a child is brought up eating a sensible balanced diet it becomes a habit .

I used to child mind a girl she was 2 years old built like a 6 year old. Her parents used to get her adult portion of pie and chips which she would eat. They didn't like it that I wouldn't give her chocolate and sweets or junk food when she wanted it.
I know children are growing but I think you still have to watch what they eat and the amount they eat

Hiya Girls,

i agree with what you said, i can't believe that they feed him up and let him have ice cream first thing in the morning just because it took them ages to bring him into the world.

I also agree that they are shortening his life by giving in all the time and my hubby was telling me that this boy isn't doing too well at school because he is so disruptive and so used to getting his own way. I wonder if his disruptive behaviour has anything to do with the junk food he eats.

xx
