 I am absolutley disgusted after watching 'Age 12 and looking after the Family' on channel 4 on Monday night. Did anyone else see it ?
I thought it was disgraceful the way those two idiots were allowed to carry on having more and more children yet accepting no more than 2 hours a week help from social services. The parents, who were partially sighted, allowed the 2 eldest girls to basically run the house, whilst they were happily drinking and smoking themselves into oblivion. The poor kids were filthy, I was crying at the point of their baby (who couldn't have been more than 8-9 months old) being thrown bread to on the dirty kitchen floor and at the part were they allowed the young baby to grab a handful or scalding hot chips then cry in pain when they burnt his poor little lips. One of the elder girls had put a bin bag over her head and the other older girl showed no emotions at all. I thought it was so sad that in this day and age, families are living in this way. I thought it was terrible the way the programme showed all this yet all the mention of help at the end was that the family were moved to a bigger house and were given a family support worker. Surely they should have people daily going in with a family of this size. Someone else must have seen it ? What did you think ? |

i watched it paula and was the same as you, i couldnt believe that a family are allowed to live this way!! It isnt anything like the situations where the child was helping an ill parent, noone can forsee a situation like that. But they were choosing to carry on extending their family, the mother seemed to be rather simple though dont you think? so surely she should be given advice on family planning. It was disgusting the way they could see no wrong in the girls doing everything whilst they sat and smoked. The house was filthy the kids were all filthy so that must be a case for social services to step in as it is neglect. They didnt eat proper meals and didnt use plates, did you se the father with a handful of chips? they must be so unhealthy. The older girl was physically abusing the children and noone seemed to see anything wrong with it and as you said she seemed totally devoid of emotion....she didnt care at all about the yoiunger sisters suicide attempt. Also why on earth have the school not done anything? Its obvious to look at the state of them that their home life has something wrong.
As you said all that was done was to give them a bigger house, they need more than that and a support worker, they need someone to teach them proper parenting skills and allow the girls to be children. it was very sad  |

Given a bigger house to breed some more for the girls to look after, no worries though as the little ones will be old enough to help out soon
I was literally shouting at the telly, my kids were looking at me gone out  You see them standing there drinking and smoking and nothing else except adding that she wanted 8 kids like her mum did  Then that woman came on that had just 1 lad and she actually cried that she thought her son was not doing what he should be while he was young. They needed help a long time ago im disgusted that nothing hasnt been done for those poor kids. That oldest one, strange girl ,yeah devoid of all emotion, did you see her taking about the 10yr old that had hung herslef next door, weird!! |

What a sickening piece of television, the only effort the parents had made to change things was to cease smoking indoors -wowee what a selfless act!! It was absolutely shocking I just hope that having seen the documentary social services have intervened although I'm not very hopeful.
I'm sure the mother wasn't completely with it either because she seemed to repeat opinions the father had expressed, they were completely devoid of love for their children and merely viewed them as their future carers. Again what a sickening program.
