Well before that we helped in the overthrow of the Shaw of Iran and put his son into power for the exchange of rights to their oil. We armed the Iranians. That eventually fell apart and the Iranians took our people captive during the Carter administration. In came Reagan armed the Iraqis, Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam and the deal was done. We now sided with Iraq against Iran who we had previously armed. That's a brief summary of our involvement in the middle-east with those two countries.
